TITLE: MATTRESS BUYING LOCATION: 首山百业城 (THE FABRICS MARKET) MISSION: PIMP MY BED DATE: 2011-09-23 Okay, so I have been here less than a week and I am dying already. Chinese beds are horribly hard. Horribly, horribly hard. One week of sleepless night left me no choice but putting my procurement skills to the test and go buy a new mattress. Actually, I didn't need to do much. Wu Yang took me to the fabrics market where I got to pick the kind of mattress and the colour of the cloth that I wanted and he took care of the rest. Even the thickest mattress in the pile (in the right corner of the third picture) was not thick enough, so they had to go get a roll of super-thick (by Chinese standards anyway) mattress from some secret mattress stockpile nearby. They asked for 170 all in all (the mattress, the cloth and the work), but Wu got it down to 120. When I got back home Bai Zhoutong asked me with a slightly horrified expression on his face what I was going to do with that thing. Sleep on, I replied, to which he just stared in disbelief. Bai comes from the countryside where they sleep on beds made out of bricks (!) with a thin layer or mud on top (!!), and only a thin thin mattress (!!!), hence his surprise. Hopefully, from now on I will get some proper sleep at night. |
