TITLE: THE BEST RIDGE OF THE SECTION
LOCATION: JÅHKÅGASKATJÅRRO MOUNTAIN
MISSION: FIND A CAMPING SPOT AMONG THE ROCKS
DATE: 2019-07-17

Camp was broken and breakfast eaten already by 08:00, giving me two hours to make my way down to the beach, which turned out to require no more than 40 minutes. Being early gave me ample time to dry out all my socks in the sun while waiting. On the beach I met two Swedes from Gällivare who passed by my tent late the night before searching for a place to pitch down, but not wanting to come too close they instead opted to just go down the last 1.6 km to the lake. I thought the boats made regular rounds but it turned out you actually had to call on them, so lucky me I met these guys who had phones with coverage. On the other side we had lunch together on the camping and met a German guy coming from the north who had started hiking 03:30 this morning just to catch the early boat but ended up missing it by just 10-15 minutes. Ouch. Leaving Vuonatjviken I passed through 11 km of woodlands dotted with small lakes everywhere, but fortunately ground and weather were dry since a massive spell of rain just missed the area while we waited for the boat to pick us up. Well up on the mountain 14 km of beautiful scenery at 900+ m.a.s.l. awaited me, and just like two years ago this was a highlight of this section. The hike was so easy and enjoyable that it went by too quickly. Closing in on the ridge the terrain became incredibly rocky, but lucky me managed to spot a small plateau of plain dirt grass next to a brook, allowing me to spend the night above the treeline. It was plenty windy and pitching the tent required me to reposition it a few times to ensure the wind did not hit me sideways. With the memory of our guy lines getting ripped up by the wind when we camped on this mountain two years ago fresh in mind I brought up enough stones from the brook to pin down all the tent pegs. Perhaps just because of my preparations the wind died down later in the evening. 23 km, 38129 steps, 12h
