TITLE: ALLEYS AND ISLANDS
LOCATION: GULANGYU ISLAND (鼓浪屿)
MISSION: SIGHTSEEING
DATE: 2012-03-06

The feeling of being on vacation hit me as soon as I woke up this morning and looked out of the window…palm trees…this is definitely something I am not used to seeing. The breakfast at Home Inn is inedible at best so we decided to bet on brunch somewhere else instead. One of the most famous scenic spots around here is the island Gulangyu just outside of Xiamen's southwest coast and we thought we might just as well start with this one as any of the other items on our list. Just opposite of the ferry docks was a Taiwan-inspired snack street were we got our first meal of the day. Not being in a rush, we decided to explore the street and the alleyways connected to it. It turned into quite the walk working our way through a labyrinth of outdoor and indoor markets. Having satisfied our curiosity, we headed back and took the ferry out to the island. It is basically one huge park filled with restaurants and museums. We rode an open tourist bus around the island and then went to the (according to Wu Yanli [吴艳丽]) most beautiful garden. When we had gotten enough of colonial style architecture and botanic gardens we went back and headed over to Xiamen University for dinner. The fish had way too many and too small bones for our liking, but the taste was nice. To top it all off we grabbed a bucket of fresh fruit and sat by the campus lake as the last daylight fled.
