Since it would have been a little much with two dinners on the same day on my birthday, the gang at Hongchang had to wait until today for our get-together. Our first destination was the restaurant Longxingtai for some hotpot. Kang Wei (康伟) and Cui Yonghui (崔永辉), second and third from the left in picture #6, are notorious for how much booze thay can drink, which led to a little extra in the class tonight. Wang Yang (王阳) insisted on engaging Kang with a bottoms up at one point during the evening that could only end in one way (Wang, furthest on the right, picture #6). I surprised myself by breaking my previous record of 1.5 glasses of liquor, raising the bar with 0.25 glasses. After dinner we went to a nearby karaoke bar. We have been hearing all week about Kang's masterful renditions of classic revolutionary songs, something that we just had to experience for ourselves. Wu Yang (吴洋) was on fire tonight, joining in whenever he could pry a microphone from someone. I had secretly been practicing on 真心英雄 (Truehearted Heroes, performed by Jackie Chan [!]) the last couple of days, which I had to do twice in order to fully please the crowd. If I keep this up I am going to need a record deal.
