Today was the inofficial Chinese holiday "Singles day". 光棍 means "a bare stick" and it is on November 11th, since the date 11/11 has four 1s, or "sticks". This year is extra special, because 2011-11-11 has two more sticks than any other year. After dinner, me and Wu Yang went to Shoushan's fanciest KTV place (金色大地) to meet up with all the singles at Hongyuan Electron. In the third picture you see me working on my rendition of 我要飞得更高 ("Fly Higher"), one of the few Chinese songs that I know. My driver, 任川 (picture 4 & 5), was on fire tonight, singing and dancing more than anyone else. Hongyuan is a joint venture with South Korean Samsung, so there were a couple of Chinese-Koreans singing in Korean as well. Chinese people REALLY like karaoke, and if you want to impress people, make sure to learn some songs well enough to howl at least. Anything will do, really. I am going for a mix of simple pop songs and easy old revolutionary tunes (我爱北京天安门).
