TITLE: 初五 (THE FIFTH DAY)
LOCATION: 丁香花园 (A RESTAURANT)
MISSION: FAMILY DINNER AND FIREWORKS
DATE: 2012-01-27

Despite the Spring Festival being one of the busiest times of the years, Xu Yang's (许諹) aunt's husband managed to get a reservation at Dingxiang Garden for tonight. Today is the fifth day of the new year according to the lunar calendar. I am not sure why it is significant, but it called for dinner and an extra nice family-reunion-cake. After dinner the youngsters took off for some fun and games at a nearby arcade. On our way we passed through The Peoples Park of Tianjin (人民公园), which is unique in that it is the only park in China for which Mao Zedong has lent his hand for the calligraphy over the main gate. Dancing is by the way extremely difficult and it gets really hot really quickly as you frantically try to keep up. I miss my Guitar Hero. [T_T] Another thing that is absolutely necessary on the fifth is fireworks. Luckily, Xu Jia's (许嘉) dad had one more firecracker-wheel tucked away on the balcony. It said "Extra Big" on the package and I suspect this was a 5000 or 7000-roll as well. We went out at midnight and placed it in the yard outside for maximum echo and noise. No one would have gotten any sleep anyway; everyone else was firing away with fireworks too.
