TITLE: A FORBIDDEN CITY
LOCATION: 故宫
MISSION: LET THE SIGHTSEEING BEGIN!
DATE: 2009-04-11

The train arrived an hour late to Beijing West Train Station and we had some trouble finding a minibus taxi that could carry all of our luggage, but we eventually made it to the hotel. Located in the small alleyways south of the extremely central shopping avenue 大栅栏 (just south of Tian'anmen Square) we had to walk the last bit by ourselves because the taxi couldn't get any closer. After showering and having breakfast we set out to see the square and The Forbidden City, which turned out to be rather ambitious in just one day. Since I am still somewhat unfamiliar with the buses and subways in Beijing, we ended up walking the whole day, which took its toll. Out of pure coincidence some art students from my university were putting up an exhibition just outside the Forbidden City as part of their examination project. The world is pretty small, huh? After a long day in the sun a depot stop at Starbucks was in order. We found one on Wang Fu Jing (王府井), the biggest and most luxurious shopping street in Beijing; without frappucinos I don't think the sisters would have made it back to the hotel. :-)
