My friend Joseph (Mr. 周) who works at the university invited me to come watch the graduate English competition. Really interesting actually. References to the greatness of the Chinese people or the Communist Party were apparently awarded with massive bonus points, seeing how all of the contestants kept going on an on about it. Something that also gave me a chuckle were the judges. There were six of them, five Chinese and one American. The American judge always rated the contestans way lower than the Chinese ones: "9.5 / 9.35 / 9.6 / 9.4 / 9.45 / 8.1". Admittedly, the topics and the follow-up questions were not the easiest (the theme was "building a harmonious society"), but I expected more for some reason. Still, kudos for writing those long speeches and participating, not something I would do.
