About half of the buses in Xi'an use a somewhat modern system with plastic cards that you put money on and just swipe when you get on the bus. The other half still employ people selling tickets onboard. It's interesting to see the girl (it's always a girl) moving back and forth through a crowded and extremely noisy bus trying to charge people for their tickets, dealing only with small bills and super small tickets. The price range from 0.5-1.5 yuan and should you ever try to pay with anything larger than 20 yuan bill you will end up taking the better part of her stack in change while receiving a nasty scowl. If you forget to bring change, just get into the I'm-a-foreigner-I-don't-understand-a-word-you-say role. ;-)
